Propecia® Sexual Side Effects

Propecia® (generic is finasteride) is a drug developed to treat certain types of male pattern baldness. It has been found to have some sexual side effects in a small percentage of men taking the medication. These include:

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Low libido
  • Decreased amount of semen

The medication is also used to treat an enlarged prostate.

Propecia® sexual side effects occur in less than 2 percent of the men taking the drug, according to Merck. Data from studies suggest this percentage is higher and more men are at risk of experiencing sexual side effects of the drug.

"It's a life sentence," a professor of biochemistry and urology at Boston University School of Medicine said. "No sex. No desire. Potential depression."

New research is showing that in a small number of cases, the sexual side effects persist even after men stop taking the drug.

Studies Link Propecia® to Sexual Side Effects

While the numbers may be small, at least for these men, it's a very serious matter, according to the Boston University professor Abdulmaged M. Traish. Professor Traish is the lead researcher in a study of the topic. He said nearly everyone taking the medication experiences sexual dysfunction to some degree, "but some experience it more drastically than others."

The medication blocks androgen in order to treat male pattern baldness or benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate). In situations of an enlarged prostate, the drug helps men to urinate more easily. But the negative side of all this, according to Dr. Traish, is that "we need androgen for erectile dysfunction, libido, and ejaculation, and for just feeling good."

He said a growing number of patients say they are having ongoing sexual problems after they stop using the medication. Dr. Traish's study was published in the March issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine. The researcher and his team of scientists searched for articles in medical publications of incidences of Propecia® and:

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Low libido
  • Impotence
  • Other sexual side effects

Another study appearing in the same journal found that when interviewing 71 men between 21 and 46 years old using Propecia®, 94 percent had lowered libido, 92 percent experienced erectile dysfunction and reduced arousal, and 69 percent had problems with orgasm. The researchers for the study were Dr. Michael S. Irwig Assistant Professor of Medicine at George Washington University and Swapna Kolukula of the Greater Baltimore Medical Center.

The interviews also showed that the men used Propecia® for an average of 28 months, but that they found they had continuing sexual side effects for an average of 40 months from the time they stopped the drug to the time of the interview.

Other Propecia® Side Effects

In addition to causing sexual dysfunction in some patients, Propecia® was reported to have the following side effects in some patients:

  • Allergic reactions, including hives, rash, itching and swelling of the lips and face
  • Breast tenderness and enlargement
  • Testicular pain
